Lawrence
R. McCarty was the first executive secretary of Sigma Delta Mu, and
became its second president. He was chosen for his scholarship in
Spanish, his administrative ability and experience, and his motivation
to develop an honor society that would stimulate and reward the study of
Hispanic languages and culture. An associate professor of Spanish at
Community College of Philadelphia, he headed of the foreign language
department and was founding coordinator of the Learning Laboratory at
the College’s Spring Garden campus. He is a graduate of LaSalle
College (Philadelphia) with a B.A. in Spanish, and studied at the
University of Havana. His master’s degree in Spanish literature is
from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.
