Officers
and Background
President Mercedes Aguirre Batty grew up on the border of the United States and Mexico. She received her B.A. in Linguistics, her M.A. in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Texas at El Paso, and her PhD in Education (Instructional Design for Distance Education) from Capella Univeristy. She has taken students to Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica, and Belize. She undertook studies in the International Field Study Program from Eastern Washington University in 1996. She was a member of the People to People program to India that year. In 1997, she completed the Online Teaching Program from UCLA Extension's OnlineLearning.net. She completed several of the advanced courses in that program. Mercedes teaches Spanish and Education at Northern Wyoming Community College District - Sheridan College. Executive Secretary Cynthia F. Bingham, current executive secretary, grew up bilingual, with a Costa Rican mother and an American father. She lived in San José, Costa Rica for thirteen years and studied at a bilingual school and at Spanish speaking schools. Cynthia lived and studied in Ponce, Puerto Rico for one academic year, graduating with honor from Liceo Ponceño High School. She taught Spanish for six weeks in 1989 for an ASU Summer Abroad Program, and has developed a very successful yearly cultural awareness travel program. She has traveled with students to Mexico, Spain, Italy, Greece, France, Monaco, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Egypt, Scandinavia, China. In the fall of 1998, she began serving as National Secretary for Sigma Delta Mu. Bingham is a member of Alpha Mu Gamma and serves as faculty association treasurer at CGCC. She is, also, an active member of the International/Intercultural Education Committee as well as various other committees. She loves and understands people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds. She is fascinated with things that are different and out of the ordinary. She enjoys teaching, skydiving, camping, the outdoors, gardening, eating foreign foods, and shopping. Bingham is the mother of three and has been married for 25 years. Cynthia holds a Master of Arts with a major in Spanish Language and Culture from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a minor in French from Bringham Young University. For three years, she worked at Brigham Young University Language Training Mission. Cynthia holds a Master of Arts with a major in Spanish Language and Culture from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a minor in French from Bringham Young University. For three years, she worked at Brigham Young University Language Training Mission. In 1990, Cynthia moved to Chandler-Gilbert Community College as a member of the Spanish Faculty. Vice Presidents Northeast: Dr. Alfonso J. Garcia Osuna and Julio E. Hernandez-Miyares. Dr. Garcia Osuna is Professor of Spanish and Literature and Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages of Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York. Dr. Garcia Osuna was born in Havana and did his elementary and secondary education in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. He received his Master's and Ph.D. at the City University of New York. He has published three books and numerous articles on Spanish literature and is now Associate Professor at the Kingsborough campus of the City University of New York. Professor Hernandez-Miyares is now Professor Emeritus at Kingsborough Community College and Adjunct Professor at Long Island University C.W. Post College. Southeast: María J. Fraser-Molina, Ph.D.is Dean of Arts, Sciences and University Transfer Durham Technical Community College. Southwest: Carmen Vigo-Acosta is a native of Uruguay and received her M.A. from Brigham Young University. She has served as assistant director for study abroad programs, and teaches summer classes at Middlebury College. She now teaches at Mesa Community College where she has been appointed assistant to the department chair. Her special assignment is in teacher-training. Midwest: Berta Arias, Ed.D. teaches Spanish and French. She is also the International Education Coordinator at Joliet Community College. West: Carol Beresiwsky teaches Spanish and French at Kapi‘olani Community
